Service Launch & Route
As of April 23, 2025, Renfe launched a new AVE high-speed train non-stop from Barcelona-Sants to Seville Santa Justa without making any stops in Madrid and offering better comfort and speed for passengers.
The train leaves Seville at 06:00 and arrives in Barcelona at 12:41. It leaves Barcelona in the other direction at 16:58 and arrives at Seville at 22:49. Along the way, the train has stops in Córdoba, Puertollano, Ciudad Real, Zaragoza, Lleida, Tarragona, and Girona and travels through Madrid just barely.
As well as this direct provision, Renfe continues its current timetable: six daily direct services between Seville and Barcelona—four AVE trains (two per direction) and two Alvia services Cádiz–Seville–Barcelona (one per direction).
Travel Time & Distance:
The journey is approximately 828 km in length and takes approximately 6 hours and 50 minutes (approximately from 6 hours 22 minutes to 6 hours 54 minutes, depending on the stoppage).
AVE trains run at a maximum speed of 300 km/h (186 mph) on new high-speed lines throughout Spain.
Operators & Options:
There are various high-speed operators on this route:
- Renfe AVE: The premium high-speed service with direct and choice-stop services between Barcelona and Seville.
- Iryo, Avlo, Alvia: These provide private or low-cost high-speed or mixed-gauge services running through Cordoba, Madrid, or alternative routes, providing competition and usually cutting prices.
Ticket Prices & Booking:
Tickets cost between approximately €32–38 (~$35–40) for advance bookings, although prices increase with demand, flexibility, and level of service.
They can be booked on Renfe’s website itself, Trainline, Omio, and Rail Europe.
Renfe offers ticket options:
- Básico (most inflexible)
- Elige
- Premium (first-class comfort with on-board meals and lounge membership)
Experience & Traveler Insights:
Passengers report the train to be comfortable, spacious, dependable, and Wi-Fi and charge-point equipped. Most would rather take it over flights for the relaxing ambiance and scenery.
People comment often that the entire train ride, 6–7 hours, is but slightly longer than the entire flying process (check-in, security screening, waiting), so the train is a worthwhile choice for scenery and relaxation.
